Roman cities Roman cities were walled. Rich people lived in big houses called domus. The majority of people lived in blocks of flats called insulae. Cities had a large central square called a forum. Near the forum were government buildings, temples and shops. The Romans built public baths, theatres, amphitheatres and circuses.
